Grow Your Own Gourmet Fungi. Join the HiFi Grow Kit Club!

If you’ve ever dreamed of harvesting fresh mushrooms in your own kitchen, the HiFi Grow Kit Club is your perfect entry point. This monthly subscription delivers a rotating selection of mushroom grow kits, letting you cultivate, harvest, and enjoy gourmet mushrooms in small batches, straight from home.

In this post, we’ll walk you through how the Grow Kit Club works, what to expect, and why it’s one of the best ways to learn about fungi, sustainability, and home cultivation. We also sprinkle in tips and FAQs to help you feel confident with your home kit.

Why a Grow Kit Subscription Makes Sense

  • Hands-on learning experience: Instead of buying one off-the-shelf kit, the subscription gives you repeated seasonal experience with different mushroom types. It's about as fresh & local as you can get.

  • Variety and surprise: Each month brings a different gourmet mushroom variety (such as oyster or lion’s mane), offering diverse flavors and unique growing behaviors.

  • Sustained engagement and connection: Observing multiple growth cycles, harvesting fresh mushrooms that you grew and knowing they provide nutritional value to meals is an opportunity to feel more connected to plants and the natural world. There’s joy in picking what you eat.

  • Family and educational value: These kits are great as a family or educational activity. Kids (and adults) can observe life cycles, sustainability, and microbiology in real-time.

What’s Inside the Grow Kit Club Subscription

Each HiFi grow kit includes:

  • A large fully colonized substrate ready to grow.

  • mini spritzer bottle for misting (helps control humidity)

  • Detailed grow kit instructions with step-by-step guidance. Video instructions are also available.

Shipping & logistics: Due to production constraints, kits may take up to 14 days to ship but you’ll receive tracking once your kit is en route.

How to start a mushroom grow kit

Open the kit right away
Your mushroom kit is alive! To keep the culture healthy, open the box, read the instructions and start the growing process right away. If you need to delay, the grow kit can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Cut, Mist, Grow

    • Open the HiFi Myco grow kit by following the "This side up" direction. Inside you will find a plastic bag containing your mushroom block. With a clean knife, slice an “X” or a slit in the plastic grow bag where indicated.
    • Place the kit in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight but still illuminated. We like to put ours on the kitchen counter.
    • Using the included mister, mist with water 3-4 times daily to maintain humidity.
    • Keep in a room between 18–24°C / 65–75°F
    • Watch these video instructions to see it in action.
    • Do not open the plastic after cutting.  The mushrooms know what to do.

    Harvest when full & fluffy
Most mushrooms are ready when their caps start to flatten or the Lion's Mane is uniformly "fuzzy."  Don't wait too long. Fresher is better.

Repeat the process for a second flush
Keep misting daily and you may see a smaller second flush. When the block is spent, take it outside, remove the block from the plastic case, break the block into smaller chunks outside and disperse in your garden or compost to improve soil quality. Mushroom grow kit blocks are excellent for soil. Pro tip:  with care, you can even get a third flush!

Frequently Asked Questions about Mushroom Grow Kits

Q: How long does it take to grow mushrooms?
A: Once your kit starts pinning (baby mushrooms), you'll have full size fruiting bodies in 5-10 days depending on the variety and conditions. Pinning can take from 3-14 days depending on the variety.  Oyster varieties are much faster than Lion's mane.

Q: Can I get more than one flush?
A: Yes! After harvesting, continue to mist the block daily. Soak the block in cold water for 1 hour between flushes, and let it rest for one day. Most kits yield a second flush. We only guarantee the first flush so take good care of your block.  Pro tip: After harvesting you can dilute Hydrogen Peroxide 1:1 in water and give the whole thing a good spray and wipe down.  Then you can proceed as you did before, misting with plain water.

Q: What if nothing is growing?
A: If you bought a kit from HiFiMyco, then this is a great time to get in touch with us at fungi@hifhimyco.com. We would love to help you through this process. Be sure to send a photo and we will help troubleshoot.

Q: How do I harvest the mushrooms?
A: Grab the mushroom by the base and pull up and either away or towards you.  Check out the "How do I harvest" video on our grow kit instructions page.

Q: Are the mushrooms safe to eat?
A: Absolutely!  These are all gourmet, edible mushrooms. Remove any attached substrate and cook them well to unlock full flavor and nutrition.

Tips & Best Practices for Success

    • Use filtered or room-temperature water. Avoid extremely cold or hot water.

    • Don't over-mist. Mist over the block but don't mist under the plastic flaps. Keep humidity but avoid sogginess or pooling under the block.

    • Avoid drafts or air vents.  Rapid airflow or temps that are too high can dry your mushrooms.

    • Clean handling. Use sanitized tools and wash hands to reduce contamination risk.

As always, please don't hesitate to email us pictures if you want to troubleshoot anything or want help knowing when to harvest. We want you to have the best experience with your kit!
